Does Indiana Medicaid Cover Wegovy or Zepbound?
Indiana (IN) GLP-1 access depends on three state-specific policy questions before it ever gets to pricing: does Indiana Medicaid cover weight-loss GLP-1s, has Indiana expanded Medicaid under the ACA, and does the state employee health plan cover them. Answering those first tells you whether you're likely working with insurance or planning for cash-pay.
Indiana Medicaid GLP-1 coverage: what the state's own documents say
Adults are not covered: Indiana Medicaid excludes anorectics and any agent used to promote weight loss (405 IAC 5-24-3), and only members under 21 can get Wegovy or Saxenda through EPSDT case-by-case medical necessity review. On July 30, 2026 the governor announced Indiana will join the CMS BALANCE model for Medicaid members with obesity, with no effective date or eligibility criteria yet.

Indiana state employee health plan: what the plan's own documents say
Since January 1, 2026 GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss are not covered under the Indiana state employee plan's pharmacy benefit; members were pointed to phentermine or Xenical, or to buying directly from LillyDirect or NovoCare at full cost that does not count toward the deductible or out-of-pocket maximum.

Why GLP-1 coverage varies this much by state
Medicaid is a state-federal partnership, not a single national program. Each state Medicaid agency sets its own preferred drug list (PDL) and prior-authorization criteria within federal minimum requirements. Weight-loss drugs are not a federally mandated Medicaid benefit, so states choose independently whether to cover them - which is why only 10 of 50 states currently do (Indiana is not one of them).
State employee health plans are a useful bellwether. These plans cover hundreds of thousands of state workers and negotiate directly with pharmacy benefit managers, so their coverage decisions often signal where commercial insurers in that state are heading. North Carolina's State Health Plan, for example, ended coverage of weight-loss GLP-1s on April 1, 2024, after its board voted 4-3 to cut it citing the drugs' high cost - a case that other states and large employers have watched closely.
Medicaid expansion status shapes who even has coverage to begin with. States that haven't adopted ACA Medicaid expansion have narrower Medicaid eligibility overall, which - combined with the weight-loss GLP-1 exclusion most states apply regardless of expansion status - pushes a larger share of residents in those states toward commercial insurance, telehealth, or manufacturer self-pay as their only realistic path.
National reference pricing (same nationwide - your actual cost depends on your plan)
These prices are the same across all 50 states because manufacturer list prices, self-pay programs, and telehealth pricing don't vary by state - only insurance coverage and copay do, which is why the Indiana-specific policy facts above matter more than the table below for predicting your actual cost.

Frequently asked questions
Does Indiana Medicaid cover Wegovy or Zepbound for weight loss?
No. This was checked against Indiana's own documents on September 20, 2026; coverage rules change often, so confirm with your plan before relying on it. Coverage for type 2 diabetes (Ozempic, Mounjaro) is a separate question. Medicare's GLP-1 Bridge, which started July 1, 2026, works separately from Medicaid and applies in every state.
Has Indiana expanded Medicaid under the ACA?
Yes - Indiana has adopted Medicaid expansion, which broadens who qualifies for Medicaid coverage generally, though it does not by itself guarantee GLP-1 weight-loss coverage (see above).
Does the Indiana state employee health plan cover Wegovy or Zepbound?
No. This was checked against Indiana's own plan documents on September 20, 2026; plan terms are reset each plan year, so confirm with your plan before relying on it.
